Laminate Hardwood Flooring - These free-floating, interlocking planks made of pressed wood byproduct have an artificially printed veneer and an extremely hard and durable finish layer. Laminate is the most cost-effective and easiest-to-install type of hardwood flooring. Despite its durability, laminate is highly susceptible to problems caused by moisture. So, if you are installing in an area where moisture is of concern, a more appropriate choice is engineered or solid hardwood flooring.
Engineered Hardwood Flooring- Each plank of this type of flooring has a plywood core with an actual wood veneer as well as a very strong finish layer. Installation methods can include nailing, gluing, and interlocking (similar to laminates). Though more susceptible to denting, these floors are less likely to have problems due to moisture or humidity.
Solid Hardwood Flooring- Traditional hardwood floors are typically made from solid planks with a stained and finished top. Solid hardwoods carry the characteristics of the woods from which they are mad and therefore can range from very hard to very soft. Installation methods include nailing and/or gluing the boards to the subflooring.
